In Henstedt-Ulzburg on 9 May 2023, the modern offices of our long-standing partner and PackSynergy member Huwald Liebschner GmbH were the setting as this successful partnership took another step forward.

During a product training session, our Area Sales Manager Stefan Wiese explained the great deal of work that DEBATIN GmbH and the DERIBA Group put into sustainable packaging.

Schulung bei Huwald Liebschner DEBATIN

The specific properties of each product were presented and detailed information on the important sustainability considerations was provided.

“As Huwald Liebschner GmbH is one of the PackSynergy Group’s pioneers when it comes to sustainability, we were particularly happy to meet their request for intensive training,” says DEBATIN CEO Thomas Rose, who adds, “Our products help our customers to be more sustainable in terms of packaging and, as our products are already carbon-neutral, our customers can become carbon-neutral themselves more easily.”

The participants were particularly impressed by the recycling loop that is facilitated at DEBATIN in conjunction with other companies in the DERIBA Group.

Recycling

Of considerable interest to the Huwald Liebschner team was the difference between the recycling of waste as part of the production of film, compared with the collection of waste plastic from consumers, and cleaning and recycling it to create new recyclate – as well as the challenges faced when this recycled material is to be used to produce film again.

The requirements that must be complied with to gain permission to display the Blue Angel ecolabel on a company’s products were also explained.

The participants could well understand the enthusiasm for the projects that DEBATIN supports through natureOffice in the context of carbon neutrality, thus putting into practice its dedication to responsible and social action that extends beyond carbon offsetting.

Even when the Blue Angel label cannot be granted as the required 80 % post-consumer recycled material (PCR) cannot be attained, DEBATIN still uses film containing recycled materials for its products. For example, the UNIPACK® document pouches do not use film laminate or compound films.
The fact that the paper we use for the spines boasts FSC® certification and our product boxes are also made from FSC®-certified material now almost
goes without saying.

With one exception:

DEBAPOST-Paper-Second-life

The new DEBAPOST® Paper Second life mailing bags

are made of 100 % recycled paper – a special moisture-resistant paper – and thus sustainable forest management is not an issue.

The bags also have another special feature:

The ISEGA (Industrie-, Studien- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft), which is an accredited laboratory and state-approved research institute for paper, cardboard and food packaging, has published a test report confirming that the DEBAPOST® Paper Second life mailing bag is biodegradable and can be disposed of as organic waste.

During the training session itself, questions that arose were answered. The participants were also provided with extensive documentation after the event.

Stephan Kowalewski, Head of Purchasing and QM Officer at Huwald Liebschner, described the training course as “super” and “informative”, while also asking a few questions about technical points. And it is precisely this dialogue and the willingness to address new information that is one factor in making working together a success. To sum it up, Huwald Liebschner and DEBATIN both pursue the same goals when it comes to sustainability.
