DEBATIN’s sustainability strategy and corporate strategy revolve around recyclability, mindful use of resources, a circular economy, environmental performance and carbon neutrality. In these areas, we’ve been practising what we preach for many, many years.

Our company and our products are carbon neutral. Many of our products are made of recycled materials (film and paper) or monomaterials (which are easier to recycle), using environmentally friendly, sustainable production methods. Our products are tested, certified and easy to recycle.

Environmentally friendly & sustainable: Testing and certification give customers peace of mind

All our environmentally friendly, recyclable products and materials are tested and certified by independent organisations and institutes, and labelled accordingly (e. g., the Blue Angel label). Certification, logos and eco-labels create transparency, give customers peace of mind and help them to choose the right product for their needs.

Eco-labels and certificates: What do they tell you?

What do the various eco-labels, certificates and symbols tell you about a product? What aspects are tested?

Here’s a small overview:

Blue Angel

The Blue Angel eco-label was established in 1978 and is awarded to products and services that are especially environmentally friendly. Over the years, the Blue Angel label has been awarded more than 12,000 times, Now, some forty years on, it’s one of Europe’s best known eco-labels. The Blue Angel symbol confirms compliance with extremely high environmental, quality and health standards.

FSC®

The FSC® label is awarded only following stringent checks to products made of wood, which is a valuable renewable resource. To qualify for certification, the wood must meet the strict criteria dictated by the Forest Stewardship Council®, an independent NGO. The FSC promotes responsible forest management: environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

Carbon neutrality

In order to protect natural resources and the environment, we need to use fewer resources (e. g., less wood, water and energy) and reduce harmful emissions during production. In short, we need to avoid, reduce and compensate.

Developing environmentally friendly processes, solutions and products helps to reduce harmful emissions; using fewer materials in general, or switching to recyclable monomaterials and/or recycled materials where appropriate, reduces them even further. The final carbon footprint can then be calculated exactly, and measures taken to offset unavoidable emissions, e.g., investing in carbon offset schemes around the world. Made for Recycling

The “Made for Recycling” certificate is awarded to products that are particularly suitable for recycling – made of recyclable materials and easy to separate during your waste process. Interseroh Dienstleistungs GmbH and its partner institutes (the bifa environmental institute and the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging) are responsible for conducting the necessary assessments and awarding this certification.

The DERIBA Group – old film becomes new (recycled) film

As a member of the DERIBA Group, we and our highly specialised partners now offer customers a closed recycling loop for film: the DERIBA CYCLE®. In the spirit of the circular economy, we collect, sort and recycle used film and safe bags produced by the DERIBA Group. The recycled film is then given a new life in products such as our DEBAPOST® Second Life safe bags and mailing bags. To support the cycle, we’ve developed a DERIBA recycling kit so that customers can collect their waste polyethylene packaging and return it to us. By channelling this waste back into our recycling loop, we can significantly reduce the amount of material we use and greenhouse gases we emit. At the same time, we ensure a steady supply of high-quality, recycled film.

Sustainable packaging, packaging laws and plastic packaging taxes – how do customers benefit?

By consciously opting for our sustainable products, our customers are proactively helping to protect the environment, support recycling and reduce waste. In other words, choosing to use sustainable mailing and packaging solutions is choosing to help the environment. But it also greatly benefits your company image, because it proves to customers that you’re environmentally aware, foresighted and committed to sustainability in all your business practices.

In addition, using recycled or recyclable materials and reducing plastic waste will help your company to meet the requirements of the new EU Packaging Directive and avoid the plastic packaging taxes that are due to apply from 01 January 2021. Under the new plastic packaging tax, EU member states will be required to pay € 800 for every tonne of non-recyclable plastic packaging waste.

The EU commission is currently evaluating various plans submitted by individual EU countries for using the income generated by this plastic packaging tax. Once this step is completed, the tax must be formally passed by the EU ministers of finance, and ratified by the parliaments of each member state. So there are still several boxes to tick, but we can nonetheless assume that this tax will be introduced on non-recyclable plastic packaging in the very near future.
